Water Pumps

What You Need to Know before Buying a Home with Well Water

Are you looking for a home in Passaic County? Before you purchase a home that uses well water, there are a few important things you should know. There are different parts that need to be maintained and various signs to watch for in the event of a well water issue. The team at Ackerson Pump Company recommends educating yourself on the areas below before purchasing a home with a well.

Have the Water Tested

Before you move in, you need to make sure the well water is safe for consumption, especially if the home has been sitting empty for some time. Tests can be completed by the county health department and should include checking for turbidity, alkalinity, pH, minerals, bacteria, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Ask for Maintenance Records

In addition to having the water tested, it’s a good idea to ask the current homeowner for any maintenance or repair records so you have a better understanding of the well’s condition. If they didn’t keep accurate records, you can call and make an appointment for one of our licensed technicians to perform a professional well inspection. If they do have records but you’re not sure how to decipher them, you can stop by our office and we’ll be happy to review them with you.

Protection is Key

Regular maintenance and protection from man-made or natural elements will keep your water well and pump in optimal condition for decades. We recommend having your well inspected for mechanical problems and the water tested for contaminants once a year. Several times a year, between inspections, you should check the well cap or cover for any damage. This will help prevent rainwater and contaminants from seeping into the well.
