Submersible Pump

What Is a Submersible Pump?

If you have a sump pump in your basement, then you are probably familiar with submersible pumps. But that’s not the only application for submersible pumps. It’s important to note the difference between pump types and make the right decision on a water pump based on your specific needs. And when it comes time to install a new pump, you can trust Ackerson Pump Company to provide expert service with quality products and speedy installation.

What Is a Submersible Pump?

A submersible pump is an air-tight sealed motor, close-coupled to the body of the pump that is fully submerged in water. A significant advantage of a submersible pump is that it never has to be primed since it is already submerged in fluid. They are also very efficient machines because the surrounding water pressure pushes water into the pump, reducing the amount of energy needed to operate.

Submersible Pumps vs Jet Pumps

Most pumps fall under the category of being either a jet pump or a submersible pump. Jet pumps essentially pull water out and are often paired with a pressure tank. Submersible pumps work by pushing water upward. If you are looking for a well water pump, choosing between a jet or submersible pump will depend on the depth of your well and where it is located.

Things to Consider

Whether you are in the market for a new sump pump or well water pump, there are a few things to consider to select the best pump for the application. The size of your house is a significant factor. Pumps are rated in GPM (gallons per minute). Add one GPM for every water fixture in your home. Although you’ll want a pump large enough to handle your home water needs, an oversized pump can be energy inefficient.
